This artwork is from Eddy Ilunga's series Fragile Responsibility.
In his own words:
"I am deeply concerned with trying to understand, study and deal with the vulnerable condition of society in my country, of its historical memory in and of itself. I try to weave together themes such as memory, identity loss, and the lack of a coherent historical narrative (greyness, the past).
By attentively aligning my practice to these critical political questions, I hope that this can provide an overview of the socio-political experience characteristic of life in the Congo today (the present, current events). How can a society become enslaved in its own country, because of the absence of responsibility amongst its leaders?
This project is my way of paying homage to the slaves and ancestors who resisted human trafficking. I also offer a perspective on the socio-political landscape in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. I tackle complex questions and unspeakable subjects without resorting to brutality or shock tactics. By making conscious artistic choices, I aim for my art to be a space where people can be involved without feeling uncomfortable.
In other words: I try to bring about a cognitive change (awareness) that awakens the freedom to act accordingly."
